Codemasters declares war on surplus
software. Centennial Discovery Software uncovers GBP11,000 worth of
redundant licenses Following the latest research from the BSA (British
Software Alliance) which found that 27% of software in the UK is
pirated, some British companies are using asset discovery tools to
actually help improve their software optimisation. Codemasters, the
leading developer and publisher of critically acclaimed video games, has
used an automatic IT asset discovery tool to identify redundant software
and achieve savings of GBP11,000 in just one month.
The leading British video games company,
which has operations in the UK, USA Germany and Spain, used the
Discovery solution from Centennial Software to find, identify and audit
all hardware and software on its network. By reconciling the number of
applications in use against the licenses it held, the video games
specialist was able to see where it had more software than it actually
needed.

easyJet Successfully
Navigates Technology Turbulence With Centennial Discovery Software
Prior to the merger, GoFly was required to
move to a new Microsoft licensing model and was given a deadline of July
2002, by which time full compliance was required. Any knowledge of
software or hardware assets that resided in each machine was
traditionally obtained by undertaking lengthy walk round audits and
individual PC examinations. This data was held in a series of
spreadsheets and was quickly outdated as software changes occurred and
memory upgrades were made to individual machines. It was clear that if
GoFly wanted to develop a means of assessing the current status of it’s
software licenses, an asset management software tool was required. In
2002, following the announcement of the easyJet/GoFly merger, it was
clear that a detailed knowledge of both existing airlines’
infrastructures was required if combining the two was to be effective.
Consolidation of the IT systems would not be possible without a detailed
picture of all the components and applications that required
integration. What was needed was a tool that could identify in detail
what hardware and software components were present on each PC and where
it was situated at both airlines. Without a means of charting
electronically both infrastructures, the laborious process of tracking
what hardware existed at the easyJet site and making the necessary
comparisons with GoFly would have ground the integration almost to a
halt.

LONDON BOROUGH OF MERTON SUCCESSFULLY
MEETS LICENSING INSPECTION BY MICROSOFT WITH RAPID DEPLOYMENT OF
CENTENNIAL DISCOVERY INVENTORY TOOL AND GOOD HOUSEKEEPING
The London Borough of Merton is today
calling for local government institutions across the UK to act now to
protect themselves from the aggressive software license inspection
campaigns that Microsoft and the Business Software Alliance (BSA) have
brought to bear upon the UK's network of local government authorities.
The London Borough of Merton was recently
targeted by Microsoft for a license inspection of its software
inventory. The IT Services division of the local authority chose
Centennial Discovery inventory tracking software supplied by Networld
UK, a Centennial Discovery reseller. The software helped to underpin the
policies and working practices by identifying what licenses were in use,
which licenses were redundant and which areas of the software inventory
required new licenses, prior to the inspection.
The London Borough of Merton worked
closely with Networld UK to ensure that it was given a clean bill of
health following a rigorous inspection by Microsoft appointed agents.
The local authority uses approx. 2000 software licenses that cover the
use of software applications across the organisation.
